Why can I get amazing service for books but struggle to get if for full truck loads?

In many instances the first a company knows that it has a problem is when the customer phones up to complain. This is the worst kind of customer service. If I buy a book for a fiver from Amazon I trigger a high level of customer service and information with an audit trial from the point of order to delivery and if necessary painless and seamless return. Why don’t companies offer similar service levels for orders worth many thousand times more than my book? The technology exists today.
